A day in the life of…Steve Jackson, MD, Wheely-Safe

Where do you work?
Burntwood, Staffordshire.

What time does your day normally begin?
I usually leave home around 7.30am. The 30-minute drive to work gives me the chance to make the first phone calls of the day.

What type of customers do you normally deal with during a working day?
Because of the nature of our business we are dealing with a diverse client base. Basically, if it’s got wheels, then it will be of interest to us.

How much of your day is spent in the office/workshop and how much on the road?
On average I’m probably in the office four days a week. This is a welcome change as before Wheely-Safe I was head of UK sales at Wrightbus and spent 12 years living out of a suitcase.

What types of products in your sector are selling at the moment and where do you see expansion in 2018?
We are manufacturers of the world’s first in-motion wheel loss driver alert system, and being a relatively new company, we anticipate strong growth. Our heavy vehicle system alerts drivers - or via telematics, the transport office - of a wheel coming loose. The same system also monitors hub/brake temperatures and tyre pressures, plus we have a light vehicle system for monitoring tyre pressures on vans and plant. Both products stand out because the sensors we use auto-pair with the solar-powered cab receiver, meaning they are quick and simple to install.

How long have you been with the business?
I joined in April, so it’s exciting times.

Will Brexit have an effect on the industry in 2018?
In general, people do not deal well with times of uncertainty, which is what we have now. Because of this uncertainty people become risk averse, leading to a slowdown in the buying cycle. Brexit will have some effect on all of us, albeit in different ways.
