Fifth wheel manufacturer Fontaine has launched a new heavy duty sliding fifth wheel for use up to 80 tonnes.

The 170SF Heavy Duty 2’’ Sliding Fifth Wheel is said to allow for a heavier payload without the need to specify costly super-heavy duty sliders resulting in its use in 80-tonne applications.

This mounting option utilises the Fontaine 170CL Heavy Duty 2’’ Cast Fifth Wheel, with heights from 148mm – 257mm (plus 40mm height for the slider), and standard DIN 6 mounting brackets. The mechanism release is available in manual or air-operated configurations.

The slider is certified to the international regulation for fifth wheels (ECE R 55-01) and tested to 25-tonne imposed load.

The system also works with Fontaine’s Green Eye sensor kit which indicates when the fifth wheel is correctly closed the safety clip in place.

Fontaine’s patented TechLock system can also be used with the new heavy duty fifth wheel which is specifically designed to reduce miscoupling as its jaw height sensor will not allow the fifth wheel to close if the kingpin enters at the incorrect height or position.
