Continental has unveiled the next iteration of its tyre pressure monitoring platform at IAA, which promises real-time alerts if there is an issue with tyre pressure or temperature.

ContiConnect Live tells truck fleet operators immediately if there is a problem with the temperature or pressure of a tyre, even when the vehicle is on the road. The data is transferred to the servers and the web portal by the ContiConnect Driver app, which is also new. Before the end of this year, the app will be able to show tyre information on Daimler Fleetboard and TomTom Telematics devices as well as other Android devices, such as smartphones and tablets, initially in the driver’s cab.

Nikolai Setzer, executive board member and head of the tyre division at Continental, said: “ContiConnect Live integrates our digital solutions for commercial vehicle tires into the existing in-vehicle systems and displays. Fleet customers can thus embark on digital tire management on the basis of their existing devices.”

In addition, launching in October for first test customers is ContiConnect’s slow leak detection, which provides alerts that tyre pressure is decreasing at a much earlier stage than with traditional TPMS.

Continental also presented its Conti e.MotionPro tyre, which was developed for MAN’s electric truck, the CitE, at IAA (pictured). The tyre manufacturer noted that new vehicle concepts can change the traditional centre of gravity, wheel loads and torques, which can affect the load capacity or wear resistance of traditional truck tyres, for example.

Klaus Kreipe, head of original equipment truck tires at Continental, said: “Electric vehicles can temporarily be fitted with conventional tyres. However, the new powertrains and the new vehicle concepts that are sometimes associated with them will change the requirements for commercial vehicle tyres. We are currently making use of partnerships to gain valuable experience for the development of tires for electric trucks and buses.”
