The Institute of Road Transport Engineers (IRTE) is launching a tyre fitter accreditation scheme at the show.

Irtec Tyre follows the Irtec accreditation scheme for truck and trailer repair and maintenance technicians, which has 8,000 accreditations.

The aim of independent assessment and accreditation of tyre fitters is to improve standards and safety in the sector by encouraging operators to use companies that only employ Irtec-accredited technicians.

“The IRTE identified that tyre fitters do not get the recognition they deserve,” said professional standards manager Robin Bates. “As well as raising standards this will benefit fitters’ careers.”

Irtec Tyre has been tested with a number of tyre companies including Bridgestone, and fitters will have to undertake practical and theoretical tests before becoming accredited to the new standard.
