Versatility and manoeuvrability were top of the bill when JC Balls & Sons chose its new 6x4 Mercedes-Benz Arocs tippers.
Plant manager Jamie Balls said: “A 6x4 truck is a lot more manoeuvrable than an 8-wheeler, which is a big advantage on some roads.
The lighter vehicle also comes at a lower purchase price and is cheaper to operate.”
The trucks are fitted with lightweight Thompsons Stonemaster bodies and have 354hp engines.
The Derbyshire operator, which specialises in excavation, earthmoving, plant hire and recycling services, runs a fleet of 38 trucks, the majority of which are 6- or 8-wheeled tippers.
The company said it favours 6x2 vehicles for work on local highway contracts, which it tends to do over the summer.
