Mercedes-Benz has developed a tractor-unit variant of its Econic, following strong demand from operators looking for an urban distribution truck with enhanced direct vision.

The manufacturer said it took the decision to develop the variant after being approached by a number of operators, including supermarkets, 3PLs, general distribution and construction firms.

UK operators have already lined up to trial the Econic tractor-unit. Mercedes-Benz said the truck is likely to be first tested in London, before moving on to cities such as Birmingham and Manchester.

The test model is a 4x2 with a maximum GTW of 36 tonnes.

Mercedes-Benz head of strategic accounts and municipal sales Stuart Jeggo said while 44-tonners are the most common tractor units, there has been an increasing trend from operators looking at smaller urban trailers as a safer, more manoeuvrable option for cities. “Which is where we see this new Econic fitting in,”he said.
