The building materials manufacturer Forterra will equip its fleet with Michelin X Multi and X Works tyres. Following a tender process, Michelin is the company’s chosen provider for a three-year pence per kilometre contract. Michelin tyres replace a tyre maker that Forterra previously used for 15 years.

Forterra is trialling the X Multi across its predominantly Volvo fleet and will fit X Works tyres to its vehicles operating in off-road environments such as building sites. This initial trial period will help to inform which tyre suits each vehicle's work best.

John Anderson, national logistics director at Forterra said: “We had full confidence in the quality of the product, which is excellent. However, the thing that took Michelin’s offer to the next level was their ability to analyse our fleet’s performance to ensure it’s running as efficiently as possible. Yes, you are their customer but the way they approach things feels like a partnership, with a focus on sustainability, improving MPG and ensuring we have the right tyre for the specific job.

Michelin operates a multi-life policy to extend tyre life, reduce environmental impact and minimise total cost of ownership. Once the tyre has reached the end of its first life, it will be regrooved then retreaded as a Michelin Remix tyre. After the Remix tyre is worn it can be retread again to create an Encore tyre.

Anderson added: “As a business the shift to four-stages of life for each tyre is a big opportunity for us, which will enhance our sustainability efforts and help us manage our costs.”

Based across 13 locations, Forterra operates a fleet of 143 trucks, and 153 drawbar trailers. Its truck fleet includes tractor units and rigids which are paired with drawbars that feature mechanical offloading systems. The company moves around 500 million bricks annually.
