Mostyn-based Monk Transport has bought three Volvo FH500 6x2 tractor units specified with the D13K Euro-6 engine, which produes 500hp and 2,500nm of torque.

The engine is paired to a 12-speed I-Shift automated transmission which pushes power through RSS1356 rear axles with a ratio of 2.50:1.

All were specified to include the Swedish manufacturer’s 4.5-tonne Lite pusher-axle to maximise payload potential. The Alcoa Dura-Bright alloy wheels also help reduce the kerb weight.

James Monk, who runs the company with his brother Philip, said: “Volvo’s lightweight specification drops the kerb weight by half-a tonne reducing the number of trips the truck has to make.”

These new Volvos are the lightest on his fleet yet they can pull a payload of 29 tonnes over the course of 140,000km per year, completing two trips each day, “so a journey is saved every six weeks.”

Monk chose Globetrotter cabs for his new tractors: “It’s extremely important for us to attract the best drivers in what is a difficult marketplace. To do this we opt for Volvo trucks featuring the highest level of driver comfort including leather seats, touch screen navigation, microwave ovens, and televisions.”

Monk concluded: “When you combine this with the legendary driveability of the Volvo we feel it’s a stunning combination and the drivers’ incredibly positive feedback is testament of this.”
