MAN revealed the first details of the electric version of its smallest truck model, the TGL.

Set to make its debut at the upcoming Hannover IAA trade show, the MAN eTGL will start at a gross vehicle weight of 12 tonnes, giving a payload of 6.6 tonnes for a truck fitted with a box body and tail lift.

Power comes from a 210kW electric motor paired to a minimum of two battery packs with a combined usable capacity of 160kWh. That’s enough to see the eTGL have a range of 235km. Charging will be via CCS as standard at a rate of 250kW but the high-voltage system is a similar module system to that used in larger MAN e-trucks which are already testing mega-watt charging systems at speeds of up to 1000kW. For now, the eTGL will have the ability to recharge to 80% in around 30 minutes.

Initial options will see the eTGL fitted with a day cab and built on 4.5m wheelbase with body lengths of between 6.2m and 7.3m.

“It was our obligation to secure a full range from 12 to 50 tonnes,” Alexander Vlaskamp, CEO of MAN Truck and Bus said.

“We have various applications which we have already show from eTGX and eTGS in construction to refrigerated goods, we’re now rounding this off by having the eTGL available for distribution in the inner cities, where you really want to have silence and clean transportation,” he added.

Vlaskamp said that more than 2000 orders have already been taken for MAN’s existing e-trucks and by broadening the choice available they expect order levels to grow. MAN is also working hard on developing the infrastructure necessary to support its e-trucks.

“We have been working hard to take the experiences from over 2000 electric buses in Europe,” explains Vlaskamp, who went on to explain the role MAN’s parent company Traton Group is playing with the Milence charging network project with sister-brand Scania as well as Volvo Group and Daimler, describing the project as being on an “exponential curve” towards delivering charging.

Full series production for the eTGL will begin later next year in MAN’s Krakow plant with deliveries expected by Q4 2025.
