Scania has announced that it is having to rename its S-series trucks, apparently in response to Daimler defending the rights to use the designation S followed by three numbers in automotive applications. Consequently, the S730 will now become the 730 S, and likewise throughout the flat-floor sleeper cab range. This disrupts Scania's naming convention of cab type followed by engine rating, which dates back to 2004. The naming change doesn’t affect the other Scania cab types, including, inexplicably, the G-series despite both manufacturers currently marketing, for example, a G 350 model.
The head of Scania Trucks, senior vice-president Alexander Vlaskamp explains “By making this adjustment, we fulfil an agreement we have made with Daimler. We are keen about protecting our brands and recognise why Daimler, with their long-standing S-class passenger car history, had an issue with the S-series trade name.”
