After 58 years and 4.5 million examples, the next generation of the FUSO Canter is now available to order in the UK. Key features are a restyled cab and enhanced safety equipment, together with some revised model combinations.

Technical details include eight wheelbase options, ranging from 2,500mm to 4,750mm, with GVWs of 3,500kg, 6,500kg (4x4 only), 7,500kg and 8,550kg. Three power ratings from the four cylinder, 3.0-litre engines, now meeting the Euro-6e emissions level with a new, more compact exhaust system, range from 130hp to 175hp.

A variant new to the UK is a 3,500kg Canter which has the narrow 1,700mm S (Standard) cab as an alternative to the familiar 2,000mm-wide C (Comfort) cab, and also features the option of a new 3,400mm wheelbase. Crewcabs will continue to be available on selected variants.

Externally, the new Canter features new styling, with the option of LED headlights. The existing safety systems are now complemented by the option of Sideguard Assist, which uses radar sensors to warn if vulnerable road users are detected on the nearside when steering or indicating left. At the rear, under-run protection has been improved.

Manufactured in Portugal, and sold here by Mercedes-Benz Trucks UK, the new model will enter production this December. No details are yet available on pricing changes.
