Nikola Corporation, manufacturer of the range of hydrogen and battery powered heavy trucks aimed at the European and North American markets, has announced what may be the breakthrough in battery technology that the industry desperately needs.
Described as having free-standing self-supporting electrodes, Nikola claims that the new battery will have four times the energy density at half the cost of existing lithium-ion batteries.
It says this would give the possibility of 800 miles between charges on a laden heavy truck.
Nikola is offering to share the intellectual property with other truck OEMs if they contribute to the project.
Full technical details will be kept under wraps until the Nikola World 2020 event, expected to take place next autumn.
