Scania has extended its alternative fuel truck line-up with the launch of a CNG-powered 6x2*4 rear-steer tractor.

The new truck, which is rated at either 420 or 460bhp, is available with the Super gearbox and rear axle options. It has a range of over 400 miles at 44 tonnes.

Key to the vehicle’s existence is the addition of Scania’s Increased Vehicle Dimension (IVD) front bumper. This slight protrusion, allowed under the latest European masses and dimensions regulations, permits an extended wheelbase, allowing it to carry 220kg of gas.

A rear-steer configuration ensures compliance with stringent turning circle requirements.

Phil Rootham, pre-sales technical manager at Scania UK, explains that customers have been requesting a 6x2 CNG-powered tractor for some years, but up until now it hasn’t made sense. “Previously we couldn’t package enough capacity to make it a viable product, but legislative changes around IVD opened the door and made the product worth doing,” he says.
