Leicestershire-based S&J Haulage has expanded its fleet with the delivery of 15 lightweight tri-axle curtainsiders from Tiger Trailers. The trailers were developed in conjunction with Tata Steel and were built at the company’s state-of-the-art £22m factory in Cheshire.
Tiger identified the need for lighter clearspan curtainsiders two years ago, and last year worked with Tata to resolve this. Tata supplied Tiger with a premium steel twice the strength used in standard trailers, which meant far less steel was required for supports and resulted in a weight saving of approximately 500kg.
The result is one of the lightest 4.35m tri-axle clearspan curtainsiders available in the UK, with a payload of up to 29 tonnes on certain configurations. All the new trailers are EN12462XL-compliant and FORS silver accredited, and Tiger is working on gold accreditation.
S&J MD Steve Haines said: “We knew Tiger Trailers had been co-operating with Tata to develop a lightweight trailer. We are impressed with how Tiger worked with us to deliver an exacting specification that optimises our operation. It’s likely we’ll be forming a long-term partnership with the team in Winsford.”
The trailers have a pillarless, clearspan design and roof-mounted load restraints, which are crucial for secure loading of Jeld-Wen products, one of S&J’s longest-established customers that produce windows and doors.
“We’re often loading full-height Jeld-Wen wood products,” said Haines, “and the sliding load restraint system makes life easier, faster, and much safer for drivers securing loads.”
S&J’s curtainsiders will be joined shortly by three double-deck boxvan trailers from Tiger Trailers, following recent contract wins for S&J’s European operations.
Based in Melton Mowbray, Palletline member S&J Haulage runs a 40-strong fleet and specialises in general haulage, European deliveries and UK overnight distribution. It runs Mercedes-Benz and Iveco trucks, although the fleet largely comprises Scania trucks, and it recently acquired four more R-series 6x2 tractor units.
