Volta Trucks has paired up with Petit Forestier to develop a refrigerated electric HGV for the rental market, marking the former company’s largest-ever order.

The latter firm, which specialises in refrigerated CV rental, will take delivery of 1,000 16-tonne vehicles developed by the electric truck manufacturer, which should be available for hire in 2022.

They will be bodied and kitted out by Petit Forestier’s in-house equipment company Lecapitaine, and join the group’s existing fleet of more than 58,500 vehicles.

The first examples are due to be tested in 2021, before full-scale production begins the following year.

In a joint statement, the companies said they also intended to develop technical expertise around electric vehicle maintenance and “simplify operational deployment”.

“This partnership embodies our desire to significantly increase our pace in terms of innovation and energy transition of our fleet. We are taking action now to prepare for the future and to provide our customers with the best zero-emission refrigeration solutions, designed for their urban deliveries,” said Petit Forestier Group CEO Léonard Forestier.

“When we launched the Volta Zero, we knew that there was a pent-up demand for the electrification of trucks,” added Volta Trucks CEO, Rob Fowler. “The unprecedented reaction from our customers, decarbonising their fleets to meet forthcoming legislation, and improving the environment for everyone, has more than validated our expectations.”
