The Volvo Trucks wholly-owned dealership site in Croydon has been officially opened following a £2 million redevelopment, and with a new name, Volvo Truck and Bus Centre London South. The original depot was opened in 1980, and with a location just 10 miles from both central London and the M25, it is a crucial part of Volvo Truck’s network. The dealership employs around 70 staff, half of them being HGV technicians, and operates two shifts a day from Monday to Saturday. Six double-length repair bays are complemented by a dedicated ATF lane.
Around a quarter of the refurbishment cost has gone on drastically improving its sustainability credentials. While the old site was responsible for an annual CO2 output of 282 tonnes, it is now expected to be carbon net zero thanks to the use of solar panels, movement sensitive smart LED lighting and ground-source air pump heating, while new doors and skylights to provide more natural lighting, and better thermal insulation contribute to reduced energy consumption. It is also the first certified zero-to-landfill operation within Volvo’s UK network.
Revealing a commemorative plaque at the opening ceremony, Volvo Trucks UK & Ireland MD Christian Coolsaet, said: “This site has been a major hub within our network for more than 40 years and, following this latest investment, we’re confident it will play a pivotal role in our future - particularly as we support local fleets in transitioning to a new generation of quiet, zero tailpipe emission battery electric trucks. Whilst much of our focus has been on promoting the benefits of these cleaner and greener vehicles, in the background we’ve also been working to reduce the environmental impact of our services and operations. What we’ve achieved with our London South dealership sets a fantastic example to the industry and is a credit to the teams managing this project from concept to completion.”
Stuart Potter, operations director for the dealer group, added: “The investment ensures we have an ultra-modern dealership in a prime location close to central London, from which we can offer customers an enhanced level of service, support future generations of product, and continue to attract the best talent wanting to join our team.”
Volvo will be exhibiting at this year’s Road Transport Expo, which takes place at Stoneleigh NAEC on June 28-30. It’s FREE to attend, and registrations are now open.
