Volvo Trucks has announced the launch of a new long-range version of its FH Aero Electric truck, slated for 2025, which will be capable of traveling up to 600km on a single charge. This significant boost in range has been achieved through the addition of an innovative electric axle (e-axle), which integrates the transmission and electric motors, eliminating the need for a traditional propshaft. This design change frees up space within the chassis rails, allowing for the installation of additional batteries.
While Volvo has not yet disclosed the exact specifications, it is expected that the battery capacity will increase from six to eight 90kWh batteries, providing a total capacity of 720kWh. In comparison, the current Volvo FH Electric offers a capacity of 540kWh and can travel up to 300km on a single charge.
The new long-haul, zero-tailpipe-emission truck will also feature more efficient batteries, improvements to the battery management system, and other enhancements to the powertrain.
"Our new electric flagship will be a great addition to our extensive range of electric trucks, enabling zero-emission transport over longer distances," said Roger Alm, president of Volvo Trucks. "It will be an ideal solution for transport companies with high annual mileage and a strong commitment to reducing CO2 emissions."
The new Volvo FH Electric, expected to support megawatt charging capabilities, will be available for sale in the second half of 2025. Additionally, the new e-axle technology is expected to be introduced across Volvo’s entire electric product line-up at the same time. Renault Trucks, also part of the Volvo Group, has already revealed that it will launch a long-range electric truck in 2026.
To date, Volvo has delivered over 3,800 electric trucks to customers in 46 countries worldwide, including at least 200 units to UK customers.
“The transport sector accounts for 7% of global carbon emissions. Battery-electric trucks are critical tools for reducing the industry's climate impact,” added Alm. “Beyond the significant environmental benefits, electric trucks provide drivers with a much better working environment, with reduced noise and vibrations.”
