This Hot Topic report from Commercial Motor and Motor Transport looks at how operators are tackling the challenges of compliance.
Managing compliance issues is a complex one but the risks of getting it wrong can be expensive.
For example, figures from the DVSA show that in the year to March 2023, 457,389 HGV tests were carried out – but an initial failure rate of 11.7% meant that more than 50,000 vehicles needed some additional work.
Not only that, the year saw 569 convictions for HGV offences – two thirds of which (372) were for tachograph and record offences.
This survey analyses how operators are dealing with compliance issues and how they are making use of the increasing range of technologies available to support them.
Topics include
- Challenging times for compliance: the road transport market has thrown up some dramatic challenges in recent years, but what are the key issues in terms of fleet compliance and maintenance?
- Making the most of telematics: telematics systems are increasingly common in fleet operations but some operators are not yet getting the full benefits.
- Tacho tech getting smarter: many operators report benefits from the latest generation of tachographs, but there is still a significant number who remain unconvinced.
- Cameras – worth a thousand words: for some, fitting cameras is simply a requirement to meet an external requirement, but the operational benefits are becoming more apparent.
- Going down the digital route: digital technology can be a major aid to managing compliance issues, but are operators making the most of it?
- Record keeping – paper vs digital: operators are moving from paper to digital systems for record-keeping. Will this transition continue?
