Keighley-based Byworth Boiler Hire has added its first ever brand-new truck to its fleet, taking delivery of a Volvo FH 540 6x2 tag axle tractor unit.

The FH replaces a similar unit from a different manufacturer within the company’s five-vehicle fleet and will be used to transport industrial steam and hot water boilers to customers across the UK. Typical delivery locations include hospitals, breweries and factories.

Supplied by Jason Robinson, area sales manager at Crossroads Truck and Bus, the vehicle marks Byworth’s first experience of running a new Volvo Truck.

John Thornton, transport supervisor at Byworth Boiler Hire, says reliability and long-term value were key factors behind the decision. “In this business we can’t afford unexpected downtime, and Volvo’s reputation gave us confidence that we were investing in a vehicle built to last,” he says. “Crossroads took the time to understand our operation and present options that suited our needs, which reinforced our decision.”

Power comes from Volvo’s Euro-6 Step E D13K engine, delivering 540hp and up to 2,600Nm of torque, paired with a 12-speed I-Shift automated transmission. The driveline continuously assesses speed, weight, road gradient and torque demand to optimise gear changes.

Driver comfort features include leather upholstery, dual armrests for both driver and passenger, and fully electronic climate control with carbon filtration and air quality sensors. Safety and visibility are enhanced by rain-sensing wipers, electrically heated mirrors and static cornering headlamps.

Byworth specified a tag axle to improve manoeuvrability, reduce tyre wear and support fuel efficiency, while also helping manage weight distribution for heavy loads. “The tag axle plays a crucial role in allowing us to optimise our workflow without compromising safety or performance,” Thornton adds.

The truck is completed with Alcoa Dura-Bright alloy wheels and an in-cab microwave. Founded in 1968, family-run Byworth Boiler Hire manufactures energy-efficient industrial boilers at its Yorkshire headquarters. The new FH, specified for operation at up to 65 tonnes, is expected to cover around 100,000km a year, typically working five days a week.
