As part of its rolling replacement programme, Abbey Logistics has added 40 new DAF XF 450 FTP 6x2 tractor units to its fleet. The company runs the UK’s largest bulk liquid and bulk powder food transport fleet and replaces between 50 to 60 trucks every year. Supplied by DAF dealer North West Trucks, the new arrivals will work on jobs for food producers in the UK and Europe.
Dave Patten, chief executive officer at Abbey Logistics, said: “Our long-term relationship with DAF Trucks and North West Trucks has been built on reliability, efficiency and the strength of the aftersales support we receive. We’re delighted to be adding these latest-generation vehicles into our fleet.
“Early signs are indicating a fuel economy improvement of around 4% compared with earlier trucks of comparable specification. It’s still early days, but we’re excited to see even better fuel economy developing as more vehicles join the fleet. These improvements are vital to ensuring we deliver the highest levels of service to our customers while driving greater efficiency across our operations.”
Abbey Logistics runs a fleet of more than 400 tractor units and close to 700 tankers. Its parent company Sitra Group operates another 1100 vehicles in Europe. So far, the new XF trucks have improved fuel efficiency from an average of 10.09mpg to 10.49mpg. This 4% improvement is expected to deliver a saving of £1300 per truck annually. Achieved through engine and driveline updates, better fuel economy offers financial and emissions savings.
The new trucks feature sleeper high cabs which are designed for driver comfort. Direct vision is prioritised through the curved windscreen, large side windows and lower passenger door window to reduce blind spots on the nearside. Initial driver feedback has been positive with drivers describing the cab layout and design as beyond expectations.
