Iveco has announced a new autonomous driving programme with long-standing technology partner PlusAI, targeting the first deployment in Southern Europe of heavy-duty trucks equipped with Level 4 Autonomous Driving Systems (ADS).
The programme will see Iveco and PlusAI work alongside Spanish logistics operator Sesé and the Government of Aragon to develop and trial two autonomous heavy trucks in Spain.
The vehicles will be IVECO S-Way models, fitted with Level 4 autonomous driving capability powered by the PlusAI SuperDrive virtual driver. Multi-year testing is scheduled to begin in 2026, with a safety operator onboard throughout the trial period.
During the programme, the autonomous trucks are expected to operate on freight routes for Sesé between Madrid and Zaragoza, covering a corridor of around 300km.
Marco Liccardo, chief technology and digital officer at Iveco Group, said: “Vehicle automation is a key pillar of Iveco Group’s technology strategy,” he says. “We are pleased to strengthen our partnership with PlusAI as we continue to advance ADAS and ADS technologies on board IVECO trucks, supporting safer and more sustainable transport solutions.”
Shawn Kerrigan, COO and co-founder of PlusAI, said the collaboration demonstrates the potential of autonomous technology in European freight.
“Autonomous trucks can significantly improve road safety and transform commercial transport. Extending our partnership with IVECO to Level 4 operations in Spain shows how this technology can improve safety, efficiency and sustainability while strengthening Europe’s supply chains,” Kerrigan said.
Iveco Group has been developing autonomous and connected vehicle technologies for several years, including joint Level 2+ and Level 4 testing programmes with PlusAI. The latest initiative builds on that work as both companies move towards real-world deployment.
PlusAI is also entering its next phase of growth as a publicly traded company following its announced business combination with Churchill Capital Corp IX.
